Are QR Codes Free? What They Cost (and What to Watch For)

All QR Codes·

The short answer

Yes — creating and using a QR code is free. QR is an open standard (ISO/IEC 18004) that anyone can generate without a licence or fee, and scanning is free too. So why do some sites charge? Here's what's genuinely free and what to watch out for.

What's always free

  • Generating the code — turning a link, text, Wi-Fi or contact into a QR code costs nothing.
  • Scanning it — any modern phone camera reads QR codes for free.
  • Static codes — a code with the data encoded directly in it works forever, with no hosting and no expiry.

Our generator is genuinely free: unlimited codes, logo and color customization, and all four export formats (PNG, SVG, PDF, EPS) with no watermark and no sign-up. Try it here.

What some "free" generators charge for

Many sites advertise "free" but lock the useful parts behind a paywall. Watch for:

  • Codes that expire — some dynamic codes stop working after a trial, breaking your printed materials unless you pay.
  • Watermarks — a logo stamped on your code until you upgrade.
  • Locked downloads — SVG/vector or high-resolution files behind a subscription.
  • Branding — logo and color features gated to paid plans.

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes never expire — the data lives in the pattern itself. Dynamic codes point to a short link a provider hosts; those only "expire" if the provider switches the link off (often when a free trial ends). If you need editable, trackable codes, pick a provider that keeps them working — or use static codes for anything you can't reprint. Learn the difference in our dynamic QR code guide.

When paying makes sense

You might pay for advanced features: bulk generation, team accounts, detailed scan analytics, or guaranteed dynamic-link uptime. For most people — a menu, a Wi-Fi code, a business card, a link on a flyer — a free static or dynamic code is all you need.
