Can You Edit a QR Code After Printing It?
The quick answer
It depends on the type. A static QR code cannot be edited after it's created — the information is baked into the pattern. A dynamic QR code can be edited any time, even after printing, because it points to a link you control.
Why static codes can't change
In a static code, the actual data — the URL, text, Wi-Fi password or contact details — is encoded directly in the black-and-white modules. Change the data and you get a completely different pattern. So once it's printed, it's fixed. Static codes are perfect for information that never changes: a Wi-Fi password, a business card, a phone number.
How dynamic codes let you edit
A dynamic code encodes a short redirect link instead of the final destination. When someone scans it, they're forwarded to whatever URL you've set — and you can change that target whenever you like, without touching the printed code. Update a menu, fix a broken link, or point a campaign somewhere new, all from a dashboard. Read more in our dynamic QR code guide.
When to use each
- Use static for fixed data you'll never change, or when you want a permanent, hosting-free code (Wi-Fi, vCard, plain text).
- Use dynamic for anything printed at scale or expensive to reprint — packaging, signage, menus, billboards — and whenever you want to track scans.
A workaround for static codes
If you've already printed a static code and need it to point somewhere new, you can't change the code — but you can sometimes control the destination. If the static code encodes a URL on a domain you own, update that page or add a redirect at that URL. This only works if you pointed it at your own link in the first place.
Best practice
For anything you might update — or anything printed in volume — start with a dynamic code so you're never stuck. Create your QR code and choose the type that fits, or browse all generators.
